off with her head! just make sure its a clean cut...

A slightly gruesome thing to blog about, but the guillotine would ensure an individuals head would be 'lopped off' at a position that could be quite accurately repeated. The blade makes the clean cut and the brace that the shoulders are forced against make sure the position of the cut is the same as on the previous individual.


Could I make a similar contraption for my bottle? This would give me a device that I could replicate a designed shape over a series of plastic bottles

A nifty idea for protecting seedlings from strong winds - just find a wide-necked bottle, cut the base off, cover the seedling and push the screw-end into the ground.

Can be removed from the ground when the seedling begins to grow.




I have seen a similar idea online, although it used the plastic bottle to direct weedkiller to an isolated weed, protecting the rest of the lawn/plants from the harmful chemicals.

The process to transform the plastic bottle into the concept above requires a simple cut with a knife or a pair of scissors. One problem associated with second life design is the finish on home-made objects. Because they have not been industrially manufactured, if you make 10 of the same object, they will all be slightly different.



The sketch above coveys the dilemma - each time I cut a bottle, the finish will be slightly different. Is there a way I can make sure every cut and every finish is exactly the same?

Answering this question may provide a solution to the lack of openness towards second-life design...

How do I get encourage individuals to change their attitude and behaviour towards second-life objects?

How can I ensure individuals focus on the potential of the object, rather than its original associations?

concept breakdown

What are the key points relating to the concept of second life objects? What do I as a designer need to to know about this process?
Familiarity - High tech/low tech: individuals are likely to be more familiar with low tech objects instead of high tech ones. For example, many people will know all the features of a plastic bottle - the cap, the thread, the bottle and the label, whereas the same people are unlikely to know all the components of a printer (see post dating back towards the beginning of the year)

Instruction - Not many individuals have the craftsmanship to even make the bottle brush broom that I did in a few days. Regardless of the tools required, many individuals will lack the know-how to complete such second-life objects.

Creativity - Regardless of the craftmanship skills some people may obtain, not all these people will have the desire or the creativity to generate the concepts that could be produced.


Key finding - is there a way to give people instruction and creativity, and insure that they know all the components of the object that could become a second-life object?

bottle function concepts part 2

see the post below, here are some more quick ideas for second-life functions:

Music shaker/percussion - quite a simple idea, but one that is also very quick to create: put some rice in the dry, empty bottle and away you go!

Timer - a little more complex, playing around with the hourglass concept. The bottle would have to be cut/drilled for this to be achieved. Is this a way forward?
Bird feeder - a bit like blue peter? but valid all the same, again would require the bottle to be altered physically.


It seems that to radically change the function, I may have to alter the shape through a a process: cutting/drilling/etc. Otherwise, I'm limited to what the original designer gives me...

bottle function concepts

lets move away from the intended function of a plastic bottle - a container for liquids - and explore the potential purposes this object has:


foot roller/massager - fill up with warm water and use the designed grip and surfaces of the bottle to massage your feet


fruit juicer/squeezer - again, using the designed shape of the bottle for a different purpose. The ridges on some bottles make a perfect surface with which to rub a halved fruit against. The juice naturally runs down the side of the bottle in to the container waiting below.



Watermark - similar to a drinking glass version that leaves the shape of a cherry blossom flower on your tabletop.
